The Department of Laboratory Medicine serves as a regional resource for clinical laboratory services required for patient care, research and educational programs in laboratory medicine. Laboratory Medicine's Virology Division has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time, temporary/hourly, day shift, UW WORK STUDY STUDENT ASSISTANT in support of the WA State COVID-19 Serosurvey.

This survey will be conducted across the state, Washingtonians will be randomly selected to complete a questionnaire and provide specimens in order to determine the percentage of the population who have COVID-19, as well as learn more about immunologic factors associated with SARS-CoV-2. The UW Virology Division is one of nine divisions comprising the Department of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Washington. The UW Virology Clinical Laboratories perform diagnostic testing for a full range of human pathogens including Herpes group, HIV, hepatitis, respiratory, and enteric viruses. The Division provides the highest quality patient care and serves as a model of excellence for clinical laboratories across the nation.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Maintain inventory tracking sheet of supplies for a large survey with a target sample size of 8,000 individuals and 2 specimens per individual over three separate data collection periods
  • Replenish supplies and support ordering of additional inventory
  • Serve as the point of contact for the regular distribution of supplies to field teams across the state with at least four field teams across 15 different counties in WA
  • Use programming and mapping skills to assist Research Coordinator and Research Nurse Supervisor with field team tracking, planning and mapping
  • Assist with data cleaning and organization as needed
  • Clean lab equipment, including centrifuges
  • Communicate professionally with members of the public for inquiries about the survey as needed
  • Encourage participation or completion of questionnaire of sampled individuals via telephone as needed
  • May assist with organizing findings for lab presentations
  • Perform other duties as required

  • REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be UW student 18 years of age and older
  • Must be UW work study eligible

  • CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
    In accordance with UW Employment and Administrative Policies, Chapter 104, Student Employees, to hold an appointment in a student job title, a student must be enrolled at the University of Washington and meet the following minimum enrollment requirements (not including correspondence credits):
  • Undergraduate students - 6 credits
  • Graduate and professional students - 4 credits
  • Ph.D. candidates working on dissertations - 2 credits
  • Granted "on leave" status (see Work Hour Limits below for information about "on leave" status and working between quarters)

    Limited to working 19.5 hours per week when classes are in session, and may work more than 19.5 hours per week during school breaks or
    when "on leave". Students are considered "on leave" as follows:
  • Undergraduates - For one quarter immediately following a quarter in which the student was enrolled for at least 6 academic credits,
    including summer quarter.
  • Graduate and Professional Students - When the student has applied for and been granted such status by the Dean of the Graduate School.
